A leading practitioner of Iraqi maqam, Hamid Al-Saadi’s music combines classical poetry with a dizzyingly complex system of musical ornamentation, modulation and improvisation. Each performance is both unique to the moment and representative of a tradition that dates back to the medieval courts of the Abbasid empire (8th-13th century Iraq) and maintains strict performance practices.
