Departmental Drop-In Advising and Placement

Drop-In Departmental, Placement, Pre-Professional Advising, Office of Community Engaged Learning

Representatives from all academic departments and programs will be available for individual drop-in consultations. If you are not sure which math or language course is right for you, or if you received a 4 or a 5 on an AP exam (or equivalent IB or A-level examination) and want to take an intermediate-level course, or if you are interested in a special permission (SP) course such as music lessons, this is the time to get the information and/or permissions you need. Be sure to bring your registration form with you.

Foreign Language Course Placement Advising (and Placement Exams)

  • 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Chicago Hall/Sanders Classroom/Blodgett Hall (See locations)

All foreign language departments will be open to students for placement advising (See locations). Please note that while Arabic is part of the Program in Africana Studies, Arabic advising will take place in Chicago Hall 103. Placement advising and exams for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean will be held in Sanders Classroom (See locations). For French and Francophone studies in Chicago Hall 102, please bring your laptop if possible, as there is a limited amount of computers available.

Music Advising and Music Theory Advanced Placement Exam

  • 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Skinner Hall, Room 205 for Music Advising
  • Skinner Hall, Room 205 for the Music Theory Advanced Placement Exam

Music Faculty will be available to meet with students who wish to take the advanced placement exam, in order to test out of MUSI 105 (Music Theory I), directly into MUSI 106 (Music Theory II, offered in Spring semester). This exam expects outstanding proficiency in four-part writing and voice-leading, harmonic (roman numeral) analysis, and figured-bass realization.

Mathematics/Statistics Advising

  • 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Rocky 305 (Mathematics/Statistics Department Lounge)

Faculty members will be available for Mathematics/Statistics advising and to answer questions. Mathematics/Statistics advising will also take place in the Bridge for Laboratory Science Atrium from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

Natural Science and Mathematics/Statistics Advising

  • 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Bridge for Laboratory Science Atrium

Faculty members will provide information about the programs and departments in natural science, mathematics, and statistics at Vassar. They will discuss curricular offerings and answer questions. Mathematics/Statisitcs advising will also take place in the Mathematics Department lounge, Rockefeller 305.

Physics Placement Exam

  • 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Sanders Physics, Room 201

Students can drop in anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to allow for 1 hour to take the placement exam.

Chemistry Placement Exam for 100-level courses

  • 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

  • Olmstead, Rooms OH 266 or 273

Students can drop in anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to allow for 1 hour to take the placement exam.
