Ford Scholar Caleb Mitchell ’22 and Associate Professor of Art Yvonne Elet are parsing thousands of documents and drawings to assess the contributions revered landscape architect Frederic Law Olmsted and others in his firm may have made to the design of the Vassar campus.
Two graduates of the Class of 2021 and seven other students have been honored for making substantial contributions to the community during the past year at Vassar. The students were named recipients of the 2021 Helen Miringoff Prizes.
Professor of Biology Mark Schlessman and two of his students spent part of the summer at local herbaria, helping to ensure that scientists from all over the world can study plant species that have been growing in the region for the past 150 years.

Assistant Professor of Earth Science Laura Haynes and three students are spending the summer analyzing tiny fossils Haynes collected from the floor of the South Pacific. Their study of the Earth’s ecosystem more than 50 million years ago can shed some light on climate change in the future.
More than 60 incoming first-year students took part in this year’s Summer Immersions in the Liberal Arts program, hosted virtually by Vassar’s Engaged Pluralism Initiative.
Climate change and sustainability were the themes of this year’s Exploring College program. Students took a mini-course on the social and economic impacts of climate change, learned about Vassar’s sustainability goals and projects and also got some tips on how to navigate the college application process.
