In 2019 Julie Riess ’82, Gerry Laybourne ’69, and Rebecca Edwards (Vassar History Department) co-founded DAY ONE Early Learning Community in Poughkeepsie. In this talk Julie Riess (former director Wimpfheimer Nursery School) will tell how their shared passion and commitment to educating children, training teachers, and empowering parents led them to create DAY ONE. She will recount the way they drew on their Vassar education to build bridges between research on child development and best classroom practices, leading them to create an innovative program that advances the well-being of children in our community and beyond.
